    • Title Application Drop-off Service

We want to make titling easier for you.

Simply drop off your title application at any DMV customer service center and get your new title in 3-5 days.

Step 1: Prepare Your Title Application and Documents

A complete title application includes:

  1. Completed Application for Title and Registration (VSA 17A)
  2. All required documents listed on our Titling a Vehicle page
  3. Check or money order payable to DMV

Use our Fee Calculator to determine the correct payment.

Note: DMV cannot accept cash or credit/debit payments for drop-off service.

Seal the materials in an envelope with your name and best contact number on it, and indicate whether you prefer to pick up your title/decals, or DMV to mail them to your home.

Please remember to:

  • Sign the back of your title.
  • Complete and sign the title’s reassignment and buyer's certification section.
  • Fill in the correct Odometer Reading.
  • Provide a complete Bill of Sale.
    • If you do not have a Bill of Sale, complete the Vehicle Price Certification (SUT-1).
    • If you do not provide a Bill of Sale or SUT-1, we will calculate your vehicle's Sales and Use tax using the NADA market value of your vehicle.
  • Fill in the Sales Price and make sure it matches the Bill of Sale.
  • If you have a DMV customer number, enter it on the form (your customer number is the "customer identifier" on your Virginia driver's license or ID Card). If not, leave it blank.
  • If you want to order a specialty plate or a personalized plate, you must fill out the "Plate Information" section of the VSA 14 and submit with your VSA 17A. Browse our specialty plates.
  • Calculate fees using the Vehicle Fee Calculator.

Remember to:

  • Select "Title and Registration Renewal" from the list of available transactions.
  • Use your VIN to ensure your entries match DMV data.
  • Use the "Help" link for assistance.

Note: The Fee Calculator is an approximation tool, and DMV may contact you to resolve fee discrepancies.

  • Make and keep copies of all documentation.

Step 2: Drop Off Application and Documents

Visit any customer service center and drop off your application at the Information Window.

If we can’t process your application for any reason, we’ll contact you to let you know what information is missing.

Note: If you previously scheduled an appointment for this transaction, please cancel it through your appointment confirmation email.

Step 3: Pick Up or Receive By Mail

DMV will process your application within five business days, starting the day after receiving your application.

If you choose to pick up your title, DMV will contact you when it is ready. Pickup is at the same location as the dropoff.

Additional Steps

DMV will contact you if we need more documentation or information for processing. If contacted, please respond quickly so we can complete your transaction as fast as possible. A delay in responding could delay processing.

DMV will include a receipt with your new title listing the fees you paid, as well as any additional fees that are due, for which you will receive a follow-up invoice in the mail.

Pay Fees Online

All you need is your DMV customer number and invoice number.

You can also pay additional fees by mail or phone at 804-497-7100.

Note: Payments received after the due date will be assessed an additional $10.

Apply With Confidence

We highly recommend reading our Titling a Vehicle page to make sure you prepare the correct documents. This helps us process your application as fast as possible.
