DMV’s electronic titling program makes it easy to transfer vehicle ownership online. This secure service lets Virginia residents transfer ownership to buyers who are titling and registering a vehicle in Virginia. If you qualify, you can complete the entire process—title transfer and original vehicle registration—without visiting an office or mailing documents.

Titles are held securely online for a faster, paperless experience. Need a printed title? You can request one anytime.

Who Can Use the Electronic Titling Program?

The seller and the buyer need to meet certain requirements in order to take advantage of the electronic titling program.

Seller requirements

  • Be a current Virginia resident
  • Not be a business
  • Have an active myDMV account

Buyer requirements

  • Be a current Virginia resident
  • Not be a business
  • Have an active myDMV account
  • Have no customer holds on their account that prevent titling

Create an online DMV account or visit a customer service center to get a temporary account PIN number.

Note: If the seller or the buyer do not meet the above requirements, you’ll need to title the vehicle in person at a customer service center or DMV Select office, or you can submit the application by mail.

Vehicle Eligibility

In order to participate in the electronic titling program, the vehicle must:

  • Have no liens
  • Have no vehicle holds on the owner’s account or the title that prevent the vehicle from being retitled
  • Have no holds on the vehicle title
  • Not have been reported sold more than 15 days prior to electronically titling the vehicle
  • Be a passenger vehicle (car, sport utility vehicle, truck; no trailers, mopeds or all-terrain vehicles)

Vehicles owned by a business; being transferred by power of attorney, divorce decree or survivorship; being titled in another state; or those seeking a sales and use tax exemption cannot use the electronic titling program.

Note: If the vehicle does not meet the above requirements, you’ll need to title the vehicle in person at a customer service center or DMV Select office, or you can submit the application by mail.

Receiving a Title

You will not receive a paper title if you use the electronic titling program. Instead, DMV will hold an electronic record of your title.

You can request a paper title one of the following ways:

  • through your online DMV account- Original Electronic Title Print transaction
  • submitting an Application for Replacement and Substitute Titles (VSA 67)
    • at any customer service center
    • at any DMV Select office, or
    • by mail
