Local governments, law enforcement agencies, state agencies, academic institutions, and private non-profits can apply for National Highway Traffic Safety Administration pass-through funding for projects related to various areas of highway safety. Applications must support Virginia's primary transportation safety goal of reducing the number of deaths and serious injuries resulting from traffic crashes.

Approved applications are funded from October 1 through September 30.

VAHSO typically announces the request for applications January 31.

Applications must be submitted on or before February 28.

VAHSO evaluates applications using several criteria, including:

  • Potential traffic safety impact of the proposed activities
  • Collision statistics and rankings
  • Seriousness of identified problems
  • Performance on previous grants
  • Proportionality of funding requested with identified traffic safety problem(s)
  • Value of the funding requested for the proposed activities

Interested applicants must attend a mandatory workshop before applying for grant funding.

More information about the workshop and guidelines for grant applications can be obtained by contacting a VAHSO program manager.

All applications must be submitted electronically. Applicants can obtain access to the application by contacting a VAHSO program manager.
