Transaction: Renew Driver's License or CDL

Use this transaction to renew your driver’s license. The next page will prompt you to log into your online account.

Introduction

  • You may renew your driver's license online unless your previous renewal was completed online or by mail or your license is suspended or revoked. Other conditions may also affect your eligibility to renew online. If you are not eligible to renew online, please visit one of our customer service centers.
  • Your address on file with DMV MUST be correct. The United States Postal Service will NOT forward your license.
  • By law, you are required to notify DMV within 30 days of moving. You can review and change your address on the next page if needed.

Renewing at the Last Minute?

Please allow 15 days for your new license to arrive by mail. If there are 15 days or fewer remaining on your current driver's license, be sure to print the official internet receipt at the end of the transaction. When carried with your current license, the receipt extends your current license for a maximum of 30 days.

What You'll Need

  • Driver's license renewal notice or driver's license
  • Payment. Options include:
    • Credit card- Discover, MasterCard, Visa or American Express
    • Debit card- MasterCard or Visa
    • Bank and checking account information to allow DMV to electronically withdraw funds from your checking account

REAL ID

If you choose to upgrade to a REAL ID at renewal, you must visit a customer service center with certain documents. Please fill out your application online to get started.

Effective May 7, 2025, the federal government will require you to present a REAL ID license, U.S. Passport or another form of approved identification to board a domestic flight or to access secure federal facilities.

Note: Effective immediately, some military bases may no longer accept standard driver's licenses which display "Federal Limits Apply." Please verify identification requirements before your visit.

You may change your status on the Donor Registry without getting a new license at Donate Life Virginia.

Delivery

Please allow at least 15 DAYS to receive your license before contacting DMV.

License Photograph

DMV will use the photograph on your current driver’s license. If you want a new photograph on your license, visit one of our customer service centers.

Voter Registration

With this transaction, you have an opportunity to apply to register to vote. If already registered, you may change your voter registration address. If you are unsure of your voter registration status, you can check the Department of Elections before you begin.

Blood Type Indicator

You will have the opportunity to indicate your blood type on your driver's license. If you previously indicated your blood type, you will have the opportunity to update or remove it from your credential.

Virginia allows veterans to add an indicator to your license. If you are a veteran, you may apply online for a veteran indicator on your driver's license replacement.
