Methods of Verification
- Verifier Apps: Businesses and organizations can download a “verifier” app to any tablet, smartphone or some point of sales systems. DMV offers a free Virginia Mobile ID Verifier app. Simply downloaded directly from the App Store or Google Play to the device that reads mobile IDs.
- Barcode Scanners: 3D barcode scanners can read the Mobile ID QR codes presented by customers. However, some system updates may be required to ensure the barcode data is properly recognized and interpreted by DMV’s system.
- Point-of-sale system: Check with your point of sales system provider. Many POS providers are include the ability to read mobile IDs within their software.
- Build a verification app to work with point-of-sale system: You have the option to use your Application Programming Interface (API) or Software Development Kit (SDK) to integrate the verification function into your existing point-of-sale or other verification system.
Acceptance of the Mobile ID
Mobile IDs must be scanned to be accepted. The current methods of verifying identity by scanning a 2D barcode or visually inspecting the physical card will not work with mobile ID.
It’s your choice how to verify a customer’s identity or age, as long as you remain compliant with applicable laws. Businesses are not required to accept mobile IDs or use the Virginia Mobile ID Verifier app or any other mobile verification app.
