Virginia Mobile ID Gains Momentum with Major Adoption Milestone

100,000 Virginians are enjoying the convenience of Virginia Mobile ID

March 6, 2026

RICHMOND, Va. — More than 100,000 Virginians trust Virginia Mobile ID as a secure digital way to carry their valid state-issued driver's license or ID card. Today, Virginians can use the Virginia Mobile ID to verify their identity without handing over their phone at Transportation Security Administration (TSA) security checkpoints, select Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) Authority pilot stores, all DMV customer service centers statewide, and with the Virginia State Police.

“Reaching 100,000 users shows that Virginians are embracing a more convenient way to carry their ID,” said Dr. Gerald F. Lackey, DMV Commissioner. “Virginia Mobile ID gives people a simple, secure way to confirm who they are as they travel, visit businesses, or access DMV services. It’s one more way DMV is always driving forward to make everyday interactions easier for Virginians.”

To make Virginia Mobile ID even more convenient for everyday use, DMV continues to expand its acceptance across the Commonwealth. Dozens of restaurants, breweries, wineries, and entertainment venues now accept the Virginia Mobile ID, including Virginia Commonwealth University's Siegel Center.

In Richmond, customers can use Virginia Mobile ID while enjoying a drink at Bolo's Eatery & Brainstorm Brewhouse or Harry's at Hofheimer, giving them a secure and seamless way to verify their age—all without handing over their phone and sharing unnecessary personal information.

The setup is easy: download the free Virginia Mobile ID app, available in the App Store and Google Play, scan your physical driver’s license or ID card, and complete the facial verification. Once finished, your mobile ID is ready to use. Customers should continue carrying their physical ID card as a backup, especially when driving. In the coming months, DMV will also introduce digital wallet options.
