RICHMOND, Va. — Building on the success of its rollouts in Richmond and Northern Virginia, the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is officially launching Virginia Mobile ID across Hampton Roads, giving residents a secure, easy and modern way to carry their state-issued driver’s license or ID card directly on their smartphones.
With Virginia Mobile ID, users simply open the app, tap their screen, and present a QR code to verify their identity or age—without ever handing over their device. After a quick verification, they’re on their way, with their personal information protected every step of the way.
“Hampton Roads is home to busy airports, attractions and travelers, making it a natural place to expand Virginia Mobile ID,” said DMV Commissioner Saundra M. Jack. “We’re excited to offer residents a secure, convenient way to verify their identity while keeping control of their personal information.”
Just in time for summer, guests visiting Ocean Breeze Waterpark, the largest waterpark in Virginia Beach, can put Virginia Mobile ID to use immediately for more convenient age verification. As a premier regional launch partner, Ocean Breeze shows exactly how digital credentials make visiting local attractions simpler and more secure for Hampton Roads residents alike.
“We're excited to offer Virginia Mobile ID as another way to make the guest experience faster, easier and more convenient,” said Brian A. Baker, general manager of Ocean Breeze Waterpark. “Providing guests with a secure, digital option that's always at their fingertips reflects our commitment to innovation and exceptional service. We look forward to seeing more businesses across the region adopt this technology.”
In addition to Ocean Breeze, Virginia Mobile ID is currently accepted at a variety of launch partners across the Hampton Roads region, including:
- Afterglow Brewing, Norfolk
- Big Ugly Brewing, Chesapeake
- Commonwealth Brewing Co, Virginia Beach
- Smartmouth Brewing Company, Virginia Beach
- Studley Brewing, Chesapeake
- TSA checkpoints at 350+ U.S. airports, including Norfolk International Airport (ORF)
- All DMV Customer Service Centers
- Virginia State Police
- A growing list of restaurants, wineries and breweries statewide
Getting started with Virginia Mobile ID takes just minutes. Customers can download the free app on App Store or Google Play, scan their driver’s license or ID card, complete a quick face verification and begin using their mobile ID. For example, if headed to Ocean Breeze Waterpark, customers can confirm they're over 21 without revealing their name and address or ever handing over their phone. Customers must continue carrying their physical ID card as a backup, especially when driving.
It’s easy for businesses to accept Virginia Mobile ID. With a quick QR code scan, customer data is transmitted securely between the customer’s phone and the business’ verifier device, with no data stored or tracked by DMV. Businesses can begin accepting mobile ID by downloading the free Virginia Mobile ID Verifier app on App Store or Google Play.
DMV is continuing to expand regional acceptance of Virginia Mobile ID throughout the state at a variety of businesses and organizations.
