RICHMOND – The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will host a REAL ID appointment-only event this Saturday, April 26, 2025, to assist customers ahead of the upcoming federal enforcement deadline. This special event offers dedicated, convenient service for Roanoke-area customers seeking to obtain a REAL ID.
A Virginia REAL ID is optional, but it’s a convenient choice for those who frequently travel or visit secure federal facilities. It's easily identified by the star in the top right corner of the card.
Starting May 7, 2025, the federal government will begin enforcing the requirement for a REAL ID—or another federally accepted document, such as a passport—to board domestic flights or enter certain federal facilities, including military bases. While the enforcement date is approaching, your real deadline to get a REAL ID is well before your next flight or visit to a federal facility. Plan ahead.
