DMV Launches New Speed Prevention Campaign Encouraging Drivers to Slow Down

New Ad Uses Video Games to Demonstrate the Consequences of Reckless Driving

October 31, 2023

RICHMOND – Video games can sometimes paint a different picture, but speeding in real life delivers real consequences as shown in a new gamer-themed ad by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

“Speeding is no game,” said DMV Commissioner Gerald Lackey, the Governor’s Highway Safety Representative, “and yet it continues to cost the lives of hundreds of Virginia motorists every year on our roadways. It’s always better to arrive at your destination a little behind schedule rather than never at all.”

For more than a decade, speeding continues to be the leading cause in fatal crashes on Virginia roadways. So far this year, there have been over 20,000 car crashes in Virginia where speeding was a factor, resulting in 370 fatalities.

The new spot features a gamer who is speeding through several streets of Virginia and quickly realizes that driving too fast has consequences.

You can view the ad, produced by Two Tango and Alice Blue in Richmond, by visiting the locally customized links below. The ad can also be seen on social media, streaming platforms, and video-equipped gas station pumps across Virginia.

The message is clear. “If you speed… You lose.”
