RICHMOND - Halloween is right around the corner, and the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is encouraging those who plan to celebrate the holiday weekend to take a moment to review safety tips before heading out.
Last Halloween weekend, there were 1,454 crashes on Virginia roadways, resulting in 10 fatalities and 652 injuries; two of the deaths occurred in alcohol-related crashes.
"Since Halloween falls on a Monday this year, we anticipate that children and adults will celebrate throughout the weekend. We have a shared responsibility to be extra cautious whether a motorist or pedestrian," said Acting DMV Commissioner Linda Ford, the Governor's Highway Safety Representative. "Before heading out, put safety front of mind to help ensure a safe and happy holiday for everyone."
Tips for motorists:
- Enter and exit driveways and alleys slowly and carefully.
- Stay below the posted speed limit and avoid passing other vehicles in residential areas.
- Look out for children darting out between vehicles.
- Never drink and drive. If you do celebrate with alcohol, be sure to plan a safe ride.
Tips for pedestrians:
- Do not assume the right of way when crossing the street, because motorists may not see you.
- Stick to the sidewalk, instead of walking on the street. If there is no sidewalk, walk beside the road, facing traffic, to increase visibility.
- Attach reflective tape to costumes or candy bags and give each child a flashlight to make them easier for drivers to see.
