Ineligibility to Renew Online or by Mail
You cannot renew your driver's license online or by mail IF:
- Your license has expired and you have not proved legal presence
- Your license is suspended or revoked
- Your driver's license is not due to expire within the next 12 months
- You have failed the DMV vision screening
- You want to have the vision restriction removed from your driver's license after having laser surgery to correct your vision
- Your name is to be changed or corrected on your driver's license
- You hold a learner's permit
- You hold a Virginia identification card
- You owe money to DMV for a prior transaction
- You need a new photograph
- Your customer number on file needs verification
- You do not have a Virginia address
- You have moved out-of-state and gotten a new license in that state
- You hold a driver's license with a school bus (S) endorsement
- You have a social security number (SSN) that does not match your SSN on file with the Social Security Administration (SSA)
- You are required to present proof of legal presence
- You are under medical review
- You renewed online or by mail during your prior renewal cycle
- You are over 75 and hold a driver privilege card
- You must register with the Virginia State Police as provided in section õ9.1-903
- You are required to take the knowledge exam or road skills exam
Information for Driver Privilege Card Holders
- You are not required to provide proof of legal presence
- Your driver privilege card cannot be renewed more than six months early.
- You cannot renew an expired driver privilege card; you are required to make an appointment for in-person service at a DMV office and meet all the requirements for obtaining a driver privilege card including the submission of the necessary identity and residency documents.
