To purchase license plates, you'll need:
- Your title number and vehicle identification number (VIN), which are on the vehicle registration card.

If your vehicle registration expires this month and you have fewer than 15 days remaining on your current registration, be sure to print an official Internet receipt. This receipt, when carried with your current registration card, will extend your current registration for up to 15 days, allowing DMV time to mail decals for you to display on your current plates until your new plates arrive.

Note:
In Northern Virginia areas that require emissions inspections, the inspection station will electronically post the test results to your vehicle record.
When purchasing plates, DMV will not ask for emissions information unless your vehicle failed the test or this information has not been received from the inspection station.
