Apply to Register to Vote
You may apply to register to vote or change your voter registration name or address at any DMV office or during a driver’s license, ID card or address change online transaction; however, DMV DOES NOT register you to vote or change your voter address. By law, only a local voter registrar can register you to vote or change your voter information.
In person or through the mail, you can use DMV's driver's license/ID card application (form DL-1P) to indicate that you would like to apply to register to vote or change voter information.
If you are a citizen of the United States and wish to apply to register to vote, answer the citizenship and voter registration questions on the application with "Yes."
If you are conducting a transaction in person at a customer service center, the electronic screen located at every customer service window will prompt you to answer the required questions to apply to register to vote or to update your voter information with the Department of Elections. Please read each question carefully and complete the entire transaction. DMV will electronically transmit your responses to the Department of Elections.
You may also apply to register to vote or change your voter information online during a driver’s license transaction, ID card transaction, or address change transaction on DMVNow.com.
You are not registered to vote until your voter registration application is reviewed and approved by your local voter registrar. If approved, you should receive a voter registration letter within 30 days showing your voting location and election district. Contact your local registrar if you do not receive the voter registration confirmation.
In addition, you can check with the Virginia Department of Elections at 1-800-552-9745 (TTY 711) if you have questions about voter registration or the status of your application, or if you do not receive your voter registration card.
Check Your Voter Registration Status
You can check your current voter registration status as well as find out where you are registered to vote through the Virginia Department of Elections.
