Online Driver's License Renewal Eligibility

We are unable to process online driver's license renewals if you have a suspended or revoked license or if you hold a Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Additionally, we cannot process your driver's license renewal online if one of the following conditions exists:

  • You have failed the DMV vision screening.
  • You are restricted to daylight driving only.
  • You want to have the vision restriction removed from your driver's license after having laser surgery to correct your vision.
  • You are age 75 or older. (You must complete the vision screening requirements.)
  • Your name needs to be changed or corrected on your driver's license.
  • You are under 21 and have had one or more moving violations since your last driver's license renewal. If you are under age 21 and have one or more moving violations, you will be required to take the knowledge test.
  • Your license has been suspended or revoked in Virginia or any other state.
  • You hold a learner's permit.
  • You hold a Virginia ID card.
  • You owe money to DMV for a prior transaction.
  • You have a profile picture on your driver's license.
  • Your driver's license expired. You must provide legal presence documentation in person.
  • Your driver's license will not expire for 6 or more months.
  • You have a driver's license photo needs to be retaken.
  • Your customer number on file needs verification.
  • You do not have a Virginia address.
  • You have moved out-of-state and received a new license in that state.
  • You hold a driver's license with a school bus (S) endorsement.
  • Your last renewal was completed using an alternate renewal method (online, telephone, mail or fax).
  • You are required to register pursuant to chapter 9 of title 9.1 of the Code of Virginia.
  • You are required to provide proof of legal presence.
