Deactivate Plates

Purpose:

Use this feature if you wish to temporarily deactivate your vehicle license plates and registration. While your registration is deactivated, you are not required to carry insurance on your vehicle and do not have to surrender your plates. While there is no fee to deactivate your plates, there is a fee to reactivate them.

IMPORTANT: The vehicle must NOT be driven during the deactivation period. It is illegal to drive a vehicle with deactivated plates. You could be cited by law enforcement for driving a vehicle with an inactive registration.

Leased Vehicles:
Deactivation MUST be requested by the vehicle owner (leasing company). The individual leasing the vehicle is not authorized to conduct this transaction without specific power of attorney from the leasing company. If you have obtained power of attorney to deactivate the vehicle's plates and registration, you must visit a DMV customer service center to provide this documentation.

Deactivating Multiple Vehicles:
If you are planning to deactivate plates and registration for multiple vehicles, you must process each deactivation separately.

Reactivation:
In order to reactivate your plates and registration, you must furnish proof of insurance, if it is required, and have no outstanding obligations. Insurance policy information will be verified electronically with the insurance company. If coverage cannot be verified, your privilege to drive and register motor vehicles could be suspended.
