Virginia Highway Safety Office

Commissioner's Message

Commissioner D. B. Smit
Listen to Commissioner Smit's
message on highway safety.

Your safety is the number one priority of DMV: The Virginia Highway Safety Office (VAHSO). Our mission is to reduce crashes, injuries, fatalities and associated costs by identifying transportation safety issues and developing and implementing effective, integrated programs and initiatives to address these concerns.

As Virginia's highway safety authority, DMV collects and manages traffic crash data and related information. Using innovative technologies for detailed analysis of crashes, DMV conducts problem identification and resolution. DMV uses this information to develop and implement effective programs to make Virginia's roadways among the safest in the country. We also manage and administer federal funding statewide to improve Virginia's overall highway safety program. In doing so, we collaborate with the Virginia Department of Transportation, the Virginia State Police, local law enforcement and other state agencies and non-profit partners to develop a coordinated, innovative approach to enhance safety on our roadways.

The VAHSO is committed to saving lives. We will continue to lead the way and engage our highway safety partners and advocates in solving traffic safety problems, promoting community safety and planning for the future.

As Governor Tim Kaine's highway safety representative for Virginia, I welcome you to the Virginia Highway Safety Office's webpages. They are a comprehensive traffic safety resource that serves to communicate, educate and raise the awareness of the motoring public about highway safety issues in Virginia.
