Getting Started

Are you new to the trucking, transportation or construction business? Do you operate trucks or heavy equipment as part of your business? This section can help you to identify the DMV credentials necessary to operate legally in Virginia.

Complete the following questions about your operations and vehicles and we'll point you to the requirements that are likely to apply to your company.

Do you operate vehicles that have two axles and a gross vehicle weight or registered gross vehicle weight of more than 26,000 pounds; or vehicles that have three or more axles regardless of weight; or vehicles that are used in combination, when the combined weight is more than 26,000 pounds gross or registered gross vehicle weight at any time?
4. Do you operate a vehicle(s) with a registered gross vehicle weight of 55,000 pounds or greater?
5. Do you operate a vehicle(s) interstate that meets any of the following critieria.
  • Has a gross vehicle weight rating or gross combination weight rating, or gross vehicle weight or gross combination weight of 10,001 pounds or more; or
  • Is designed or used to transport more than 15 passengers, including the driver; or
  • Is used in transporting hazardous materials (49 U.S.C. 5103) in quantities requiring placarding (49 CFR, subtitle B, chapter I, subchapter C)?
6. Do you operate or have drivers that operate a vehicle(s) that meets any of the following criteria?
  • Has a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more; or
  • Is a combination of vehicles with a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 pounds or more if the vehicle(s) being towed has a GVWR of more than 10,000 pounds; or
  • Is designed or used to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver; or
  • Is used in transporting hazardous materials (49 U.S.C. 5103) in quantities requiring placarding (49 CFR, subtitle B, chapter I, subchapter C)?
