Operating a Motorcycle in Virginia

Virginia law defines a motorcycle as a motor vehicle.

If you operate a motorcycle in Virginia, you must hold a valid driver's license with a Class M designation. If you are learning to operate a motorcycle, you may obtain a motorcycle learner's permit

Titling and Registering Your Motorcycle

If you own and operate a motorcycle, you must title and register the motorcycle and display appropriate motorcycle license plates.

Required Protective Gear

Motorcyclists in Virginia (both operators and riders) must wear an approved protective helmet. In addition, the operator must either wear a face shield or safety glasses/goggles, or the motorcycle must be equipped with a windshield type approved by the Virginia State Police.
