Operating a Motorcycle in Virginia

Virginia law defines a motorcycle as a motor vehicle. If you operate a motorcycle in Virginia, you must hold a valid driver's license with a Class M designation or a motorcycle driver's license. If you are learning to operate a motorcycle, you may obtain a motorcycle learner's permit.  If you own and operate a motorcycle, you must title and register the motorcycle and display appropriate motorcycle license plates.

Motorcyclists in Virginia must wear an approved protective helmet. The operator must also wear a face shield or safety glasses/goggles or the motorcycle must be equipped with a windshield type approved by the Virginia State Police. Passengers must also wear an approved helmet.
