Multiple Order Fees - Frequently Asked Questions

If you have more than one suspension/revocation/disqualification order, Virginia law requires you to pay a $5 fee for each additional order as well as a reinstatement fee. For example: If you are reinstating your driving privilege and have three effective orders, DMV will require you to pay the highest reinstatement fee, plus $5 for the second order and $5 for the third order.

  1. What are Multiple Order Fees?
Effective July 1, 2011 Virginia law requires any customer, with 2 or more suspension/revocation/disqualification orders in effect to pay the highest reinstatement fee for one order as well as $5 fee for each additional suspension/revocation/disqualification order. This $5 fee is referred to as a Multiple Order Fee.
  2. Why do I have to pay a Multiple Order Fee?
Effective July 1, 2011, Virginia law requires payment of this fee when a person has more than one effective order that requires a reinstatement fee. This fee helps recover administrative costs associated with the compliance of multiple orders on a customer's record.
  3. If I have multiple orders in effect prior to July 1, 2011, will I be charged Multiple Order Fees?
    • If you have PAID the reinstatement fee prior to July 1, 2011and are eligible to obtain a license, no Multiple Order Fee will be required.
    • If you have PAID the reinstatement fee prior to July 1, 2011 and you are still not eligible to obtain a license (i.e. you have not satisfied all requirements for reinstatement), no Multiple Order Fee will be required unless a new order goes into effect on or after July 1, 2011.
    • If you have NOT PAID the reinstatement fee prior to July 1, 2011 and you are not eligible to obtain a license, you will be required to pay the reinstatement fee and then a Multiple Order Fee for each additional order.
  4. If a suspension/revocation/disqualification order is received on or after July 1, 2011, will a Multiple Order Fee be required?
    • If you receive only one order, and have no other effective orders requiring a reinstatement fee, no Multiple Order Fee will be required. However, you will be required you to pay the reinstatement fee for the order received on or after July 1, 2011.
    • If you have other effective orders requiring a reinstatement fee, you will be required to pay the highest reinstatement fee and a $5 Multiple Order Fee for each additional order.
  5. If I do not pay all of my $5 Multiple Order Fee(s), can my driving privileges be reinstated?
No. Virginia law requires you to pay ALL fees before your driving privileges can be reinstated. If you have any Multiple Order Fees outstanding, your driving privileges will remain in a suspended/revoked/ disqualified status until all fees are paid.
  6. Can I request a hearing if I want to contest or dispute the requirement to pay the Multiple Order Fee(s)?
No. There are no statutory provisions to contest this requirement.
  7. Do I have to pay all Multiple Order Fees at the same time?
No. You may pay each $5 Multiple Order Fee individually, as long as the reinstatement fee has been satisfied in full. Remember that your license will not be reinstated until ALL fees have been paid.
  8. Will Multiple Order Fees be displayed on the compliance summary?
Yes. Beginning on May 16, 2011 the compliance summary will display a general message regarding the upcoming Multiple Order Fee legislation. In addition, beginning on July 1, 2011, compliance summaries will indicate if you are required to pay a Multiple Order Fee on all effective orders.
  9. Can I pay Multiple Order Fees via the Internet?
Yes. Effective July 1, 2011, Multiple Order Fees can be complied online at the DMV website.
