Half a Million Virginians Sign Up for DMV's E-Reminders
Renewal Alerts Sent Via Email, Text or Phone

RICHMOND - More than half a million Virginians have signed up to receive notices from the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) via email, text or phone message since the new, environmentally-friendly service was launched last summer.

The 500,000 customers who are no longer receiving paper reminders via U.S. mail will save the Commonwealth almost $300,000. Each piece of snail mail not processed by DMV saves 59 cents in printing, processing and postage fees.

"More and more Virginians are using the web to pay bills, make travel arrangements, shop and interact with friends across the globe," said DMV Commissioner Richard D. Holcomb. "I thank these customers for recognizing that conducting business with DMV online is just as easy, and encourage more to sign up for this convenient, cost-saving service."

Customers sign up to receive electronic renewal notices for decals and driver¿s licenses by creating a myDMV account at www.dmvNOW.com/myDMV. Using a personal identification number (PIN), customers check a box indicating they want to receive decal renewal notices via email, phone or text message, and they can also manage their DMV records without visiting an office.

In addition to opting for automated renewal notices, customers can conduct a variety of secure transactions with a myDMV PIN such as renewing driver's licenses or ID cards, and obtain information specific to them, such as their driving record.
