National Driver System Maintenance Limits Licensing Services Nationwide
March 26 and 27 CDL Expirations Urged to Renew Early
RICHMOND - Due to routine IT system maintenance by the federal government on Saturday, March 26, 2011, no commercial driver licensing or commercial instruction permit services can be processed that day in motor vehicle agencies that provide weekend services across the nation. In addition, Virginia DMV will not be able to process original driver's licenses; however, DMV will be able to continue processing non-commercial driver's license renewals and replacements.
If a customer's Virginia CDL expiration is Saturday, March 26, 2011 or Sunday, March 27, 2011, the holder is urged to visit DMV to renew before the weekend to avoid having to bring additional documentation to prove legal presence in the U.S. to renew after expiration. Virginia law requires all applicants for renewals of expired licenses to show a birth certificate, U.S. Passport, or other document that proves U.S. citizenship or legal authorization by the federal government to be in the country.
The National Driver Registry (NDR), a system used for every original driver's license and CDL transaction, will be down from 3:00 a.m. Saturday, March 26, 2011 to 8:00 a.m. Monday, March 28. NDR is a national database of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that indicates whether an individual's driving privileges have been revoked, suspended, or canceled in any U. S. state. Federal law requires states to send such indicators to the national system which "points" inquiring states to the jurisdiction reporting a "problem" driver. When drivers apply for licenses in a Virginia DMV customer service center, DMV automatically checks the NDR system.
