DMV Offices Closed for George Washington Day
Customers Encouraged to Sign Up for a myDMV Account Online

RICHMOND - All Virginia Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) customer service centers will be closed on Monday, February 21, 2011 in observance of George Washington Day. Customers may continue to conduct their DMV business on holidays and every day using DMV's automated telephone service at 1-888-337-4782, through the mail or via DMV's website, www.dmvNOW.com.

"We do our banking, manage travel arrangements, pay our bills and conduct a host of other daily activities on the Internet," said DMV Commissioner Richard D. Holcomb. "Why not manage your DMV business online, too?"

Customers may sign up for a myDMV account at www.dmvNOW.com/myDMV. After obtaining a personal identification number (PIN), customers may conduct a variety of secure transactions such as renewing driver's licenses or ID cards, and obtain information specific to them, such as their driving record. Customers with a myDMV account may opt to receive decal reminders via email or phone, instead of receiving vehicle registration renewal notices through the U.S. mail.

"This service is a convenient time-saver for customers, and it's a money-saver for Virginia," Holcomb said. "Currently, one-third of Virginia's registered vehicles are renewed online. If only 50 percent of those vehicle owners opt for automated renewal reminders, the Commonwealth will save approximately $336,000 annually in printing and mailing costs."

Since the new reminder service was launched last August, more than 260,280 DMV customers have signed up to receive decal renewal reminders via email (242,030) or phone message (18,250.) Each piece of snail mail not processed by DMV saves 59 cents in printing, processing and postage costs, therefore, the 260,280 customers who opted for the new service represent a savings of almost $153,565. The annual cost of printing and mailing paper renewal notices to the approximately 5.3 million DMV customers across Virginia is $2.4 million.
